Brotherly Love with The Sisters…

...Philadelphia that is. We all know colonial history explodes on these streets, 1776 isn’t just a year, it’s THE year, and the best that this New World had to offer was right here.

The favorite eatery and meeting place of the Founding Fathers was ‘City Tavern’. Rebuilt in 1975 by the National Park Service, it looks just as it did in 1773, and is managed as a fine dinning establishment of the period. The food is interesting, well flavored and sometimes surprising. Who knew that Benjamin Franklin introduced America to tofu or ‘fizzed water’ drinks were common. A starter of Basil Shrimp was perfectly cooked, the Corn Chowder wasn’t sweet as expected, and of the entrees the Medallions of Beef seemed to be the winner. The dessert of Fruit Cobbler with oatmeal crumble was also very 18th century!

Don’t miss this place if your weekend in Philly is centered around ‘Independence Square’. (Note to self: candlelight really is wonderful for ‘women of a certain age’.)

The Last Word: this week is Philly Food: it would be a crime not to mention Philly pizza, thick and crispy; cheesesteake at Jim’s; Reading Terminal Market with more food stands than we can name, but a special ‘shout-out’ to Bassetts Ice Cream and Buddakan, a small chain of up-scale Asian restaurants that got one ‘thumbs – up’ and one ‘down'.
