The Sisters were joined this week by our New York Sister. Like all Northerners, she couldn't wait to escape the snow and sub-zero temperatures. The Florida Sisters were thrilled to have her for a whole week and we did our best to show her a good time, and that includes a lot of eating out! The Sisters will try to give a rundown and hope we don't bore you to death.
We started the week with a fabulous 2-hour Island Princess Cruise; located in Stuart and just the thing to relax, 'see how the other half lives', have a nice cocktail and get some much needed color in the New York Sisters' cheeks. We stopped at Shrimper's Grill and Raw Bar for a late lunch, and the best that can be said is that it's on the water and the view is great....Day 2 took us to the Renaissance Festival in Pompano with its knights and kings and 'heaving bosoms'. Dinner this night was at our favorite Chinese place; Grand Lake Dim Sum in West Palm Beach, where the food, according to the New York Sister, is the best she's ever eaten. (The Crispy Duck is to die for!)......Monday took the Sisters to North Miami for lunch with our cousin. The water was turquoise and the food, at Pacha Mamma (mother earth), got a 'thumps-up' from all. The table ordered a variety of dishes-a ceviche, a shrimp dish and two saltado plates. One beef and one chicken. The gravy on each of these was very different, to go with the chosen protein. Returning to our own stomping ground for dinner, we made a night of it in Delray. Rocky's Italian Bistro and Bar for the evening meal - Veal Scalopine in a sauce, lovely with it's lemon and capers; the melody of flavor in the Chicken Sorentio; and a Cheese Ravioli dish that's done better at (omg!) Olive Garden. Ending the night at Johnnie Brown's with cool drinks and a hot (?) 'Elvis' singing a love song....sigh...Day 4 was a trip the the new Wick Theater in Boca Raton. This is now home to Costume Worlds Museum and for a fee you get an extensive and interesting guided tour of the Broadway Musical Stage via this massive collection of original costumes - 'The King & I' and 'My Fair Lady' to name a few - and a so-so lunch in a Tavern-On-The-Green setting with a excellent after-meal 'talk' by a principal of the theater. A casual, but no less excellent, dinner at Chris' Taverna was just the thing, and again, a variety of dishes and nary a complaint. Grilled Chicken, Souvlaki, Loukaniko (Greek sausage), Mousaka, etc... all this and the week was only half over!
What's 'Spring Break' without a road trip? For the Sisters it was a jaunt to the West Coast of Florida and a journey on the Seminole Gulf Railway Murder Mystery Dinner Train. At the break-neck speed of 8 miles an hour we were entertained with a witty and campy 'Cold War' murder mystery, a la James Bond; done entirely in the aisle of the dining car while we ate a not-bad-at-all Prime Rib Dinner. Did the Sisters forget to mention lunch? The Fish House is a great little place in Bonita Springs, on the water (natch), where we had Wasabi Crab Cakes, Lobster Mac & Cheese and Crunchy Grouper. Early the next morning the Sisters were on their way to Acadia, FL. A small, sleepy town best know for it's 'Cowgirl Rodeo' and a whole street of antique shops. Guess what we were interested in? Having arrived just a little to early for the shops, we got ourselves a great breakfast at Wheeler's Cafe. It's old, rundown and the restroom is outside, but the food is good and the Orange Cake a dream (we heard the Peanut Butter Pie is the house specialty). Six hours later the Sisters all had packages and we needed a little ice cream on Oak Street before heading home. After a few hours on the road we were hungry again-can you believe-and stopped in St. Lucie West at the Tin Fish. A cute little place with an almost-fast-food kind of service, but better than average food. We ordered Kaboom Shrimp, Fish Tacos and the most gigantic Cheeseburger we have seen in a long time. The Sisters all had leftovers, so I guess we weren't that hungry.
Friday was our last day and we did a little 'estate sale' shopping in Palm Beach. Frigate's, a new place in North Palm Beach, was our choice for lunch. A nice location and pretty good food. We started with Steamers, followed by a Lobster Pasta, a Fish Sandwich and MacDaddy Flatbread. This last one is an appetizer but with such a large helping of sliced rib eye, it more than fit the bill with plenty left over.... A quite afternoon before our last outing to Dominic's in Boynton. The Sisters hadn't had our fix of pizza all week and we were ready to end our visit with this comfort food and say good-by to our New York Sister. We will miss her...but it will give the Florida Sisters a chance to get rid of these extra pounds in time for our next rendezvous!
