This been-around-forever converted drug store, with it's funky for-sale wall decor, repurposed lunch counter and well-dressed flamingos has enough wackiness to make even a mediocre menu enjoyable. But......SURPRISE......This food is fabulous!
The Sisters like 'small plate' dining which gives us a chance to taste a wider selection and the entrees at Rhythm Cafe are available as either full or tapas-style. With this in mind we ordered five selections from the menu and gave our excellent server full reign over table-side delivery.
We started with Cheese of Fire, known as Saganaki in Greek Cuisine; brandy flamed kassesi with lemon. Not unusual, but theatrical; fits right in. The Bobotie was next, and this was unusual. The National Dish of South Africa, but similar to moussaka (a trend?), the casserole consists of spiced ground meat, nuts, raisins, peppercorns, etc., with beaten egg and cream topping; a little fruit chutney on the side and this was a winner. The in between dish of Mushrooms Ravoilis was sauteed with spinach and scallions in a delicate butter sauce with some fresh basil on top. Yum. The last two small plate entrees followed. Boneless Lamb rubbed with garlic, rosemary and olive oil, grilled and sliced thin. A little lemon-mint yogurt sauce as condiment.....shades of tzatziki sans cucumbers. And last but not least, Tournedo Au Poivre, a small, thin pepper coated tenderloin with brandy demi glace. The tiny puff pastry cover just added that little something extra.
This little unassuming place was booked solid and turning folks away. Make reservations and make them early!
The Last Word: billed as Coconut Quiche, but a slice of coconut custard pie showed up. Good, but not unusual.
